Serena Van Der Woodsen’s Perfect NYC MorningOn October 14, 2020 by admin
As a woman who doesn’t just like tv shows, but truly falls in love with the characters on the screen, I often picture myself in the worlds of my newfound friends. I’ve wasted many hours imagining my life in black and white films and teeny bopper shows of the early 2000s. I wondered after all of these trips to the worlds of other people which don’t exist, how these characters would fare in my world today. I decided to write a series of fan fictions of the beauty routines and style choices of my favorite characters from the films and shows I love, as if they were living in today’s world and faced with the array of beauty products and clothing styles to choose from. This is an installment of this series.
She’s charming, wealthy, and effortlessly beautiful to the point where you aren’t sure if you love her or are mad she exists in real life. Girls like her can at times inspire you to aspire to their level of glamour and grace, or make you feel terrible about yourself every time she comes to mind. I try to teeter on the edge of aspiration and take a cue from girls like Serena Van Der Woodsen when it comes to style and charm.
“People don’t tell you who you are. You tell them.”- Serena Van Der Woodsen
I’ve found girls like this have many admirers and acquaintances, but often not many close friends. Men fall over themselves to be near her, but you’re sure they can’t really fall in love with someone based on looks alone so quickly and you wonder if she would ever be truly known and loved. It’s almost sad thinking about how so much beauty could actually prevent a woman from finding real love and you would feel more sympathetic if she wasn’t so gorgeous and didn’t steal everyone’s attention the second she walked into the room.
Regardless, when you are alone with her she makes you feel like the only person in the world, though you aren’t sure if you are actually close to her or this is something she does for everyone. Charisma like hers can’t be taught, it is only given by design, which makes it all the more fascinating.
Serena wakes with the sunlight and never an alarm. She arranges her curtains in the perfect alignment to catch the morning sun on her face to gently ease her from sleep. She probably dreamt about her summer on the French Riviera and awakens in a peaceful and hopeful mood. She smiles out the window at the empire state building remembering how much she loves living in the city and how everyday has so much possibility and an endless amount of interesting people to meet.
She gently slides her feet from her covers to the sun-warmed wooden floor boards and shakes out her hair. She pulls a silk robe from the clothing rack by her bed, slips it on, and walks with ease and lightness down to the kitchen to pour the espresso that someone inevitably left for her at the perfect time so that it’s the perfect temperature to drink. She’s never really sure who made it; if she is living with Blair it was Dorota, but even when she is at home with her mom it always seems to be waiting for her at the perfect moment.
“If you’re gonna be sad, you might as well be sad in Paris”- Serena Van Der Woodsen
She heads back to her room to pick out her outfit for the day- her favorite part of getting ready. It’s early fall and the city hasn’t started to cool down yet. She can get away with her summer clothes a little bit longer and doesn’t mind bringing a bit of beach aesthetic to an early fall day. She sifts through her sundresses and finds one that hits just above mid thigh, flows over her curves beautifully, and shows just a bit of cleavage- all the better for catching the eye of the cute guy that recently bought a unit in the co-op next door.
He seems like the type that spent some time in boarding school in Switzerland, whose family has a place in St. Bart’s, and definitely had family connections get him a job in FiDi where he probably sits pretty in a corner office doing very little. Not the greatest qualities, but with that sharp jawline and dimples when he smiles as she passes in the morning she might as well flirt a bit and not judge him for his family connections. After all, the only reason she got her job in casting at Paramount was because of Blair’s stepfather Cyrus who has been the studio’s lawyer for years.
She reaches into her closet for a long, double breasted blazer to make the look more work appropriate. If there was anything she learned at Constance, it was that a blazer can make any ensemble look professional and studious. Blazers gave her an air of sophistication and she swore they convinced her superiors she was capable of her job though she had no prior experience in casting.
Stepping over to her jewelry tree she tries juxtaposing some natural stone necklaces she got while working production on the set of Narcos in Guadalajara. She wonders if she can get away with wearing the Panama hat she got when she went to Cannes for the film festival last year. She decides to risk it. Lastly, she opts for some strap-y, bright colored heels that offset the look, but not in a crazy way. Okay, so maybe it looks a little crazy, but trust me once she’s dressed it will all work.
After a quick shower while listening to Khalid, she spritzes her skin with Mario Bedescu rose water, and presses a few droplets of a hemp oil serum onto her face. She just discovered this brand that does all natural hemp oil skin care and she swears her skin has never looked this radiant. She will wax poetic about how there needs to be more organic skin care options, but if she really believed that she wouldn’t also buy all her makeup from the beauty counters at Bergdorfs.
While most girls in america were smearing their lips with Dr Pepper Lip Smacker, Serena was layering on $60 a pop By Terry’s baume de rose since age fourteen. After pouting into the mirror, she runs Oribe matte waves texture lotion through her hair and haphazardly blows her roots dry with her Dyson hair dryer. She’s too impatient to fully dry all her hair, so she tosses it over her shoulders while she applies her makeup.
She’s never really needed much foundation or concealer. It’s infuriating how even after a late night, too much to drink, or pms, she still doesn’t have the hint of an under eye circle or zit. On the rare occasion she does look a bit tired, the darkness by her eye actually adds a depth and sultriness to her gaze. She haphazardly runs Chanel Les Beige Water fresh tint over her skin with the accompanying brush.
She doesn’t usually use too many brushes with her makeup because she hates washing them, but this one is just so easy to apply with that she makes the sacrifice. She dots YSL touche eclat just into the hollow area under eye and only the tiniest amount; she has found the more she applies the older she seems to look and though she has barely aged since she was 23, she doesn’t want to remind herself of the rounds of botox her mother Lily has been getting since she was 29 and how she keeps urging her to come with her on her next trip to the med spa.
She looks at her phone and realizes she only has 10 minutes if she plans to be her usual 15 minutes late to the office and convincingly blame the traffic on Madison ave. She smears Charlotte Tilbury Cream eyeshadow in Jean over her lids. Charlotte has been a friend since she met her at fashion week when she was 16 at the Victoria Beckham show. She always got backstage somehow and Charlotte rushed her into a makeup chair thinking she was a model that was late.
They had a good laugh once she explained that she was just a guest for the show, though by that time Charlotte had already taken off her base and put her signature magic cream all over her skin. Ever since then Charlotte has stayed in touch with her and sent her her line as soon as it launched. She now connects all the ingenues she works with in film to Charlotte the second they can afford her.

She finishes off her eyes with Diorshow mascara, sweeps Chanel Soleil Tan Bronze Universal over her cheeks, nose, and forehead to keep her hard-earned Hamptons tan, and finishes her skin with Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow sheer powder. A swipe of Dior Lip Glow in Pink Glow and she’s ready to put on her Outfit Du Jour.
As suspected the combination of long blazer, sundress, statement necklace, and bright heels topped with a straw panama hat works brilliantly. Making her look professional, artistic, and free-spirited- the perfect vibe to give for a job in film. Before walking out the door to hail a cab and catch the eye of her cute neighbor she spritzes the nape of her neck, décolleté, and wrists with Velvet Haze by Byredo, the perfect transition scent with notes of coconut water to remind her of summer, and patchouli to make her seem earthy and approachable.
She sashays out the door of her building to the bright New York City sun, streets bustling with parents walking their uniformed children to school, and a steady stream of yellow cabs headed downtown. She glances over toward the building next door to catch the eye of “Trust Fund Tad” as she nicknamed him, gives him a smile, and slides into a cab her doorman hailed for her. She’d have to meet him another day. After all, in Serena’s perfect world there would always be another gorgeous guy and another perfect New York City morning.
